Free Upgrade for C/C++ Tools Owners

For the next two months (until the end of March), RISC OS Open and Castle Technology will be running a special upgrade offer to any owners of a recent release of the Castle C/C++ tools suite.

If you own a version of the Castle C/C++ tools which was purchased on or after the 1st January 2006, then get in touch with Castle Technology and have your serial number handy. You will be sent an upgrade to the latest version of the tools free of charge.

Well I don’t know why but I’ve just tried “cc—version” again and I now get vsn 5.65 [18 Apr 2006]. Looks like I no longer have a problem!

Thanks

Prior to downloading CC 5.65 from the C/C++ Development Suite area, “cc—version” showed “5.64 Beta Feb 2006”. After installing 5.65, “cc—version” shows “5.54 4th Apr 2003”! If it’s any help, the size of the new cc file is 376367. Anyone any ideas?

In order to clarify something which was omitted from the original announcement, we have added the note in the news article above.

The offer is only intended for Castle C/C++ tools bought from Castle, rather than bought from any other source.

Sorry if this lead to any confusion.

Don’t worry about it – I just logged into the subscription scheme area on the Castle sight and found that the 5.65 compiler is available there so I have it now.

Well I was a subscriber to the Castle scheme on 1st January 2006 (and indeed until the middle of 2006 sometime when they failed to take the next subscription payment) so do I count as somebody who purchased it after 1st January? I obviously had access to the current release at that date.

The latest release is version 5.65 of cc (this is output if you type “
cc --version
” at the command line) so if that’s what you have then you’re OK.

To be clear here, we’ve not produced an update to the toolset – we are taking over the management, distribution and further development. As such, the Castle subscription scheme will close.

At present, ROOL have no plans to charge for future upgrades of the toolset but that will depend upon our ability to add features and fix faults at no cost to ourselves (other than donating some time). Clearly, if it starts to cost us money to develop the tools, we’re going to have to charge a small amount to users to upgrade.

Can Steve or someone else confirm what version of which programs this upgrade upgrades to?

For those who subscribed to the Castle Compiler subscription scheme is this update more advanced than the last update from Castle?

What is going to happen to the Castle Compiler subscription scheme? Is it going to finish or continue?
